The
video featuring Professor Duke on developing students’ reading comprehension
was both enjoyable and enlightening. It’s so important for teachers to ensure
that their students are comprehending grade level texts, and there are so many ways
we can accomplish this. This video taught me some new strategies for teaching
reading comprehension. The one I found most relevant was modeling comprehension
strategies. When teachers effectively model using the strategies, students can
really learn how to apply them. Additionally, the idea of teaching multiple
strategies at once teaches children to use them authentically.
I learned
so many new strategies from this video. Specifically, one practice I’d like to
implement in my own classroom is teacher-led whole-class discussions. This
means that teachers ask students rich open-ended questions to engage them in
meaningful discussion of the text.
In order
to help my struggling readers, I’d apply the same ideas and strategies from the
video. However, I’d provide them with more intense instruction and specifically
encourage them to monitor for comprehension.
