Week 11 Assignment 3

The article, "How to Teach Expository to Facilitate Reading Comprehension" was an interesting read. Children have lots of exposure to and are very familiar with narrative texts. Expository texts, however, feature unfamiliar concepts, vocabulary, and structures. In order to help our students be able to analyze and comprehend expository texts, it's necessary to first teach them about the various expostiory text structures. An effective way to do this is by first introducing the structure, then giving students multiple opportunities to work with the structure, and finally inviting students to write their own paragraphs using the same structure. Graphic organizers are a great instructional tool to provide students with as they read in order to better facilitate their comprehension. When we help students comprehend expository texts, we help them grow in their reading abilities.
