Week 9 Assignment 3

QRI5 is a diagnostic test that includes graded word lists and various passages to assess students from the pre-primer level through high school. It provides information about the conditions under which students can successfully identify words and comprehend text. The teacher testing the child can also learn about the conditions that cause the reader to unsuccessfully identify words or comprehend a passage.
The QRI5 is not a norm-referenced test; it is an individualized assessment. It helps educators accurately guage a student's reading level. The results of the QRI5 hold information that is both important and useful. Teachers can estimate students' reading levels, effectively group students for reading activities and help them choose appropriate texts.

The DIBELS is another form of assessment. Specifically, it is  used to measure students' early literacy skills. The DIBELS is composed of a series of quick tests to assess phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teachers can use the data from the assessment to identify which students need intervention and what measure of intervention is required. They can also monitor the effectiveness of current intervention.

Early literacy skills are importnat to assess beginning in kindergarten and should be assessed multiple times a year. This is because we want to ensure students' reading success and immediately provide intervention for those who need it. The DIBELS is a great assessment tool to accomplish this and should be used for all students a couple of times a year. The QRI5, on the other hand, although it assesses decoding skills and reading comprehension as well, is more of an intensive and comprehensive assessment. It should be used to assess individual students who may need intervention.
