Implications of RTI for the Reading Teacher
RTI or Reponse to Intervention is a multi tiered approach with the purpose of identifying and supporting students with learning needs. RTI begins with sound classroom teaching, ends with a supportive special education environment and includes multiple forms of support and intervention in between. Sometimes the middle tier of intervention is provided by the claasroom teacher while at other times, a reading professional may be involved. Reading coaches and teachers observe teachers in their classrooms, give them feedback and model sound teaching practices thereby effectively mentoring the teacher. I've observed a literacy coach at work. I watched her observe the classroom teacher during a reading lesson on comprehension stratgies and giving the teacher purposeful feedback afterwards. The next day, the coach modeled the same comprehension strategy in the teachers classroom while the teacher observed and took notes. This way, the teacher learned how to teach that particular lesson effectively. Reading professional help teachers meet the various needs of their students.

First, students are screened in order to gauge whether or not they are reaching benchmark goals. Then, based on the screening results, students who need it are given the necessary intervention. Next, those students' progress is monitored, and changes are made to the intervention measures if necessary. Students who continue to struggle are given further intervention in step four. Finally, teachers determine if students who are still struggling require special education services.With these steps, students are given the appropriate intervention to help them succeed in school.
